As the country's preeminent organization for the promotion of diversity and inclusion in American business, The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management awards full-tuition, merit-based fellowships to America's best and brightest diverse candidates through an annual competition.

In conjunction with our member schools, sponsoring companies, and our elite group of American MBA students and alumni, The Consortium's intent is to foster an inclusive American business environment and more effectively reflect the changing ethnic and cultural face of American business.

A Rich History

Just one year after the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, Professor Sterling Schoen of Washington University in St. Louis envisioned a cooperative program to develop minority MBAs. The program would involve a small group of graduate schools of business, working in tandem with U.S. companies.

The first steps to making his dream a reality were the establishment of admission criteria and the acquisition of funding to support the program. The Sloan Foundation awarded the project a grant to conduct a feasibility conference. Sixty influential educators and leaders from the African American community participated in the conference and determined that such a program was feasible and necessary.

To that end, The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management was developed in 1966 as an innovative program designed to hasten the entry of African American men into management positions in business.

Enhancing Diversity

The inaugural class consisted of 21 African American men and 27 corporate sponsors. After 1970, the organization's mission evolved to include women and, shortly thereafter, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans.

The Consortium

'The Consortium's intent is to foster an inclusive American business environment and more effectively reflect the changing ethnic and cultural face of American business.'

Today, the mission of The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, an alliance of leading American business schools and some of our country's top corporations, is to enhance diversity in business education and leadership by helping to reduce the serious under-representation of African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans in our member schools' enrollment and the ranks of management.

We will achieve this mission by recruiting for graduate business education qualified U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents from these under-represented groups, as well as other people who can demonstrate a commitment to The Consortium's mission and can best assist The Consortium in pursuing this mission.

Assistance for Students

Consortium representatives, alumni, and students recruit fellowship applicants by attending forums and professional conferences and by hosting receptions and information sessions throughout the United States.

The Consortium provides assistance for our students in obtaining summer internships and career opportunities with Consortium sponsors. We connect them with a powerful, influential support network of alumni, corporate sponsors, and school officials.
