Sheveron Glover Full-Time Traditional MBA
Country of origin: United States Age: 28 University attended: Southwestern Oklahoma State University Degree obtained: Bachelor of Finance
Career history Sheveron Glover worked as a financial representative and operated a company before returning to school to pursue his MBA. In his first year at OCU, he launched a high-tech company geared toward new lighting applications. Glover will graduate in 2005 and looks forward to expanding his business.
Tackling the Business Market I always dreamed of steamrolling the competition. But when my plans to play professional sports vanished, I traded my shoulder pads for double-breasted suits and went to work as an entrepreneur. With the help of my global MBA degree from the Meinders School of Business at Oklahoma City University, I am now ready to tackle the worldwide marketplace.
A star on the gridiron at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma, I earned my bachelor's degree in finance in 2000 and began preparing to play professional football. When that opportunity fell through, I worked as a financial services representative. In 2002 I started a company, Classic Irrigation.
I managed the company for two years before deciding that obtaining an advanced degree was the best way to reach the next level in my business ventures. Like many students returning for an MBA, I wanted to attend a top-tier school. After visiting the Meinders School of Business several times and seeing how it ranked compared to other programs, I felt it was the right place for me. I knew the cost of attending a private school such as OCU would be more expensive than most places, but the school worked with me to secure financial aid.
A Global Education I quickly embraced the school's commitment to providing all students with a global education. OCU is a pioneer in global education, and the business school is diverse. We have students from all over the world who are intelligent, ambitious, and resourceful. Networking across cultures is one of the best learning experiences I have acquired from my education here.
Three out of every four new jobs in the United States has an international component. I think my education at OCU has been good preparation for the changing marketplace. The professors teach you to think like a global executive, so you will become a global executive.
Mind, Spirit, and Body The MBA program is rigorous, but OCU provides everything a student needs to succeed. I depended on my background in business to help me deal with many of the challenges of the program. But I also relied upon my faith and appreciate the connection OCU has with the United Methodist Church, as well as its support of other faiths.
Still the athlete, I knocked out stress by playing basketball and working out at OCU's new multipurpose Freede Center, home to the university's excellent athletics program. The school perennially vies for national championships in several sports.
I graduated in spring 2005 and have already launched my next business endeavor, a high-tech company primarily geared to new lighting applications. The knowledge I gained at OCU is helping me to expand my business. I would recommend the MBA program to anybody who is an entrepreneur or seeks a future as an executive manager.
