Carole Alice Welsch started her career as a professional research scientist before she joined The Nanyang MBA. She pursued the MBA to acquire management and financial skills to better equip her to manage the business of science. She completed her MBA in 2005 and was placed on the Dean List, an award given to the best graduating students.
I realised that it is not just what science does not know that slows down the discovery of treatment for human diseases, but also the financial and political pressures that help guide the course of research. I also found that my personal skills and attributes would be better used in the financial aspects that manage and make laboratory research possible. As in any other industry, the field of biological sciences has a strong need for creative and competent managers with a solid understanding of the financial issues that will propel a business. Being a research scientist, as well as having a good understanding of the scientific process, it is also important to acquire business knowledge and management skills. This was why I decided to pursue The Nanyang MBA on a full-time basis.
Why The Nanyang MBA? I chose The Nanyang MBA because of its international reputation and diversity, evident in its faculty members and student body. The programme offered me a global perspective with an Asian focus, and the curriculum gave me the flexibility to tailor courses to meet my career objectives and acquire the skills required for my next career move in the pharmaceutical industry.
Singapore is currently making large strides in developing the life sciences, making it an exciting place to work and learn. Because I am planning to continue my career in Asia, The Nanyang MBA has thus prepared me well for the challenges ahead.
Learning experience The breadth and depth of business studies can be as complicated as the body's biochemical pathways. I was initially shocked by the amount of work that was required in order to learn so many subjects. It was, however, gratifying to realise that, with dedication, I could excel. The interactive and case-based learning approach gave me the opportunity to lead and, at the same time, be able to work in a team. The programme, with its highly international student body, also enriched my learning experience through my fellow students' diverse cultural, intellectual and managerial perspectives.
Overall, The Nanyang MBA has prepared me well to be an effective leader, making me strategic in my approach in managing the business processes.
