SDA Bocconi - The Bocconi University School of Management

Bocconi University is a private research university located in the heart of Milan, the leading university in Italy with a high standing in major international rankings. Established in 1902, Bocconi became the first university in Italy to grant a degree in economics. Today, Bocconi grants bachelors degrees, master's degrees, and PhDs in management, economics, and statistics. The university has an enrollment of more than 10,000 students.

Bocconi plays a major role in an elite global network of business and economics universities. Its vast array of exchange partnerships enables students and faculty to cooperate with the finest universities in Europe, North America and the rest of the world. Although Bocconi is an elite university, it is not elitist. It has always backed and practiced a policy of equal opportunity. Our teachers and students are proud to be part of this history and these feelings last a lifetime.

SDA Bocconi was established as Bocconi University's School of Management in 1971, the first year the MBA program was offered. Since its inception, SDA Bocconi has emerged as Italy's leading management school and as one of the most prestigious management schools in Europe and the world. SDA Bocconi is dually focused on the Italian and international market and aims to train the next generation of global managers, economists, researchers and academics. In addition to a full-time MBA program, SDA Bocconi offers an Executive MBA in English or Italian and an Evening MBA in Italian. Furthermore, SDA Bocconi runs international masters programs and short-term non-degree Executive courses.

Students seeking an international MBA are attracted to SDA Bocconi and Milan because the city is both a world business center and an important cultural center. Milan has more banks than almost any other city in the world, but also the Brera National Art Gallery, the Scala Opera House and the Duomo, the impressive cathedral that towers over the heart of the city. Art, theatre and film thrive here and make Milan one of Europe's cultural capitals. Italy's financial district and stock exchange are within walking distance SDA Bocconi. The two most famous streets for international fashion, Via Monte Napoleone and Via della Spiga, are also close by. Furthermore, the world famous football clubs Inter Milan and A.C. Milan play their home matches at stadiums within close distance of the school.

Full-Time MBA
The flagship MBA at SDA Bocconi is a full-time, general management program which has been run for over thirty years. The program is twelve months (October to October) and enrolls approximately 100 students from over thirty countries. The MBA program is taught entirely in English, and MBA students are offered an optional Italian for Foreigners course to improve their Italian language skills. The program is divided into four distinct phases, starting with a phase focusing on general topics which provides MBA students with the necessary tools for managerial excellence and culminating with a two-month concentration phase allowing students to deeply focus on marketing and innovation, finance or strategy.

The full-time MBA program requires a two to three month individual or group in-company project (similar to an internship), allowing students to take the knowledge and skills learned in the MBA program into a practical situation. Most students choose to take the entire MBA at SDA Bocconi in Milan, but students do have the option of spending three to four months at one of over thirty prestigious business school partners located all around the world.

Students have full access to the SDA Bocconi Career Development Service (CDS) which provides a career counsellor and a career coach for each MBA candidate. These individuals help students develop a greater understanding of their professional interests and ambitions and then help to design a personal marketing strategy. CDS also organizes company days, on-campus recruitment events, a job database, roundtables and countless networking events.

Applicants to the full-time MBA can have a first degree in any discipline but must have at least two years professional experience. Applicants are required to submit a GMAT result (there is no minimum requirement but the SDA Bocconi average is 660) and after an initial review of application materials a select number of applicants will be invited for an admission interview which will help to determine the final decision. The interview can be scheduled in Milan or in a candidate's home country.

Executive MBA - International Edition
The SDA Bocconi Executive MBA - International Edition is designed for experienced managers who are not able to take time away from the marketplace. The program is two years in duration (January to the following December), and is structured around twelve week long on-campus modules that are combined with distance-learning activities. Currently, ten lecture weeks occur at SDA Bocconi in Milan, one lecture week occurs at the UCLA Anderson School of Management in Los Angeles and one lecture week occurs at Fudan University in Shanghai. Thus, over the course of the program, participants attend on-campus modules for a total of sixty days and take part in over 150 distance-learning sessions. On average, we find that participants need to devote an average weekly workload of ten to fifteen hours to successfully complete the program. The program is committed to keeping a small class size in order to facilitate deeper interactions during lectures and seminars.

The program is divided into four blocks, culminating in a Concentration Block allowing students to focus on their particular area(s) of interest which currently include:

  • Innovation and Entrepreneurial Management
  • Financial and Investment Decision Making
  • Global Market and International Supply Chain Management
  • Fashion Experience and Design
  • Small and Medium Enterprises and Family Business

Applicants to the Executive MBA - International Edition must have at least five years professional experience (preferably with some management experience) and be at least thirty years of age.
