At the same time as he was studying, Germán Ponce set up a family business in the fruit juice sector, as his parents have a small farm near Recife. This business was started from scratch, and its production, processing and distribution have had to be built up from nothing.
'I would not be in this position without the expertise I gained at Hochschule Bremen.'
Germán's view... My decision to come to Bremen was taken because I wanted to develop intercultural skills in order to get a better understanding of different cultural backgrounds and of work in an international environment. The MBA programme at Hochschule Bremen was focused on exactly that. Through intense interactions in class with my fellow students, I developed a specific sensitivity to understand behaviour and attitudes in different cultures. Right after our theoretical year, I had the opportunity to work as a trainee in an international corporation dealing with fresh fruit in worldwide markets. This experience, in combination with my language skills, led me to being appointed by the same enterprise to help improve access to suppliers in Latin America. After two years of getting experience of the German market, I was asked to take over responsibilities at their subsidiary in Latin America.
The ability to deal with cultural diversity gained during my studies in Bremen was important for my career development. The different subjects covered, such as project management, economics, law, human resources etc, gave me both a general overview and the tools necessary for global business. Throughout the year, we could share our spare time with our classmates, as all of us were far away from home. This was also a fascinating experience because we learned so much from each other, we had deep insights into different values and this made us feel cosmopolitan.

'The ability to deal with cultural diversity gained during my studies in Bremen was important for my career development.'
Camilo's view... I chose Hochschule Bremen for several good reasons: it offers a broad and multidisciplinary management programme. As someone who likes to look at the different aspects of a situation in order to make the best decision possible, this is the place to be. And that is what management is all about, taking the best decision possible. This programme equipped me with the tools to assess the business reality around me. I was part of a multicultural learning environment. Students and professors alike came from all over the world; sharing our countryspecific realities and experiences made it so enriching. Doing business in China or India, for example, is no longer an intimidating challenge. I now feel confident because I have in-depth information and a more thorough insight. The programme also gave me the opportunity to learn a third language. Nowadays, I can happily say that I work for an international company where Spanish, English and German are used daily, and where I have contact with business partners from all over the world. I would not be in this position without the expertise I gained at Hochschule Bremen. Finally, I have to mention that Bremen is a city hard not to fall in love with. I always think that Bremen is a city that is on a human scale: small and flat to make the bicycle a wonderful means of transportation, but big enough to offer a fascinating city life. Bremen holds something for every taste, from the most simple to the most luxurious and artistic.
