Universidad Complutense de Madrid

The institution: The University and the School of Business

Hobsons MBA - Universidad Complutense de MadridThe Universidad Complutense de Madrid is the largest and most renowned University in Spain, with over 700 hundred years of history. The School of Business (Facultad de CC. Economicas y Empresariales), offers four undergraduate programmes plus several full-time postgraduate programmes that could be categorised as specialised MBAs.

The most internationally renowned is the Master in Financial Management (MFM - Magister en Gestion Financiera), which was established in 1988. This course is made in collaboration with Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG Corporate Finance and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Master en Gestion Financiera - Master in Financial Management (MFM)
The course comprises 58 credits taught in one academic year (nine months). The contents are organised in 24 topics, grouped in two parts. Detailed contents are available in Spanish on our own web page:

http://www.ucm.es/info/ecfin3/master

The aim of the programme is to offer a special knowledge of corporate finance.

Faculty
There are 60 people lecturing in the programme. Half of them belong to the permanent Faculty of the Business School and 10 percent are Professors invited from other universities. The remaining 40 percent are professionals hired from financial institutions, brokerage houses and international consultancy firms.

Alumni
There is a limited number of students (35) in each cohort. The focus of the admission process is to create a group of people with the following characteristics: high motivation,  working capacity, teamworking abilities, positive thinking, and language and computer skills.

The aim of the management is to reach a balanced weight of three types of students:
■ European Union experienced graduates (over three years' work experience).
■ Non- European Union experienced graduates (over three years' work experience).
■ Recently graduated European Union students.

All of them are grouped in teams with a balanced proportion of the mentioned types of students. Each team would benefit from the availability of time (young and foreign graduates), cultural diversity (various nationalities) and work experience (foreign and domestic experienced graduates).

Lectures and seminars take place in the afternoon. Young graduates and foreign students are required to meet in the mornings, in a special room where personal computers are available, in order to prepare case studies and seminar classes.

Pedagogical Methods and Language of Tuition
All lectures and seminars are taught in Spanish, but a good command of English is required. Some case studies and bibliographies are handed out in that language.

The methodology is based on the following principles:
■ Early delivery of written material
■ Individual preparation before lectures and seminar classes
■ Use of case studies and simulations
■ Continuous assessment of student performance.

Careers organisation
Industrial placements are mandatory for inexperienced European Union graduates. Those placements would generally be focused on the corporate branches of consultancy firms. Non European Union students have the right to compete for those placements as well.

The management of the programme feeds an updated database of former students? careers in order to direct the flow of prospective job offers to the right person.

'Our programme is focused on corporate finance, aiming to create a highly motivated group of students from diverse origins able to interact with our faculty.'
