Stories/ experiences from Indian students
Experiences/ job area before studies

My job area before the MBA-IMC studies was of an implementation consultant and leading the sales team in an IT organisation. I had to mainly advance business in the specified region and manage client relations through coaching, mentoring and support.

Reasons for applying at I-IMC/ where did I learn about I-IMC
My aim was to gain international exposure through learning in an international environment and work in a professional set-up to practise. It would mainly result in striking a balance in the knowledge gained and work done in the area of consulting.

Why decision for specialisation in consulting? Why is this unique?
My previous experience in the IT firm gave me a rough understanding of how client relation would take place in a multi-cultural scenario (in India) and the challenges of solution consulting to different audience. In order to understand how to fine-tune my skills, and to make sure that I had a streamlined approach towards solution consulting, hence the need for such an international program was evident. The uniqueness of this program is by far the program structure.
Which difficulties arose?

Difficulties were quite a few in the beginning. The German language was a challenge initially and the readiness of participants to indulge themselves in the class using a common language was low. But after a period of 3 months I could speak the language and give presentations in the class in German, and with increased contact with my classmates, the cooperation factor started on a positive note.

How was the first welcome at I-IMC?

The fist welcome in the I-IMC was when I came in the campus on the day prior to the semster-starting day. Mrs. Buechert was there to give me an idea on how the campus looked like and an idea of what was in store for me in the following months (or years) to come. Mr. Peter Link was also there to make sure that I had most of my things in order. In that respect, I must say that the help from Mr. Link was top class indeed. He had assisted me on most of the issues initially.

How were the lectures and the experiences within the semester group?
The lectures and the experience within the semester group was the experience I was looking forward to. I was very impressed with the plethora of areas from where the participants came from. Additionally I made very good experience with some of my classmates. What I consider most valuable is the honest feedback some of my classmates gave me. That will certainly be a part of the entire experience I had in Germany.

What experiences were made with the German language? Which level of German is essential a) in daily life, b) in the lectures?
The German language has to be the high point of my stay in Deutschland. I remember the first day in class. I barely could understand the lecture. But by the time I finished the course, the exposure through my work and constant speaking practise with my friends helped me get a good grasp of the German language. Well, in daily life one can manage with average German, i.e. some set vocabulary. But its highly important for students taking up the part German course to have a high level of German speaking and understanding ability.

Judgements regarding the quality of the lectures and case-studies:
My judgement regarding the content of the lectures is that the content should be more adaptive to the various fields from which the participants come from. The case studies were good. I would say that especially the case studies in Ethics, a study on FDIs by Dr.Reineke and Dr. Rainer Pzywara and case study on Mergers and Acquisitions by Mr. Eric de Roos from the Netherlands were very impressive.

Which professional occupation did you persue during/ apart from the studies? In which area, company?
I worked with an IT firm in Mannheim. This was by far a very important factor towards the successful completion of the program. I worked as a Product specialist and support for the firm. I gathered invaluable experience during the time I spent working with the clients. Needless to say, this kind of exposure is a must to make sure that a balance is achieved during the time in Germany.

For alumni only: In which field do you work after your MBA-graduation? Did the MBA accelerate your career-development? How?

I will work in the Banking and Finance field. Regarding career development, I used a combination of all my experiences in Germany to move forward. I believe that career progression is a mix of attitude and good use of the opportunities. I have used my work experience in the German IT firm as a stepping-stone for career development.

Short statement(s) summarizing the benefits of the programme:
This is a fantastic program in consulting with a top and innovative MBA structure. This allows you to strike a balance with your work and studies, gain international exposure and advance in your career.
