Career History
Ian began his career in 1990 as a technician for Eagle Star, the life and pensions provider. Since then he has furthered his expertise within financial services as client services manager for Marlborough Stirling, operations manager for Vertex Financial Services, and currently as general manager for Vertex Mortgage Services.

Why did you choose the University of Gloucestershire MBA?
People assume that because you hold a senior position in a particular working environment, you understand all the complexities within that area. However, my background is in operations, and although I had the technical knowledge of the financial sector, I needed a greater understanding of business in order for my career to progress. I was impressed by the flexibility of the course, the wide variety of subjects it covered, and the learning resources that are available at the university.

Please describe the course.
The course was well structured throughout and module guides were provided to facilitate the learning process. The subjects were varied and covered all aspects of business administration as well as personal development such as leadership style, understanding your strengths and weaknesses, and developing management skills.

What did you gain from studying alongside your fellow students?
Group discussions were a major part of the learning process and I found it enlightening and rewarding to hear views of cohorts from different backgrounds and experiences. I also gained additional support and motivation from fellow students if I was struggling with particular issues on the course.

Why would you recommend the course to others?
It helps with your career as it gives you a broader understanding of business by drawing together your different areas of knowledge. As your fellow students come from a variety of backgrounds, the interactive discussions give you a fresh insight into how other organizations work and enable you to see the bigger picture. On a personal level, it has helped me feel more confident with dealing with my colleagues.

How do you think obtaining an MBA will help your career development?
As someone who had limited post-school qualifications, as well as furthering my business knowledge, the MBA also formally recognizes the knowledge and experience I have developed in my 17-year career. For this reason, I believe it has enhanced my career prospects and since I started the MBA I have been promoted twice within my current organization.

What would be your advice for someone considering enrolling in an MBA?
I would advise them to think carefully when considering their approach to the MBA.  A distance learning environment requires you to be very self-disciplined and self-motivated and, in the absence of a cohort group who meet on a regular basis, greater effort is required on your weaker subjects. Conversely, attending your local business school will provide some of the structure and discipline that is needed to complete an MBA. In addition, a network of diverse individuals working on the same subjects is a real source of support by helping you understand the subject matter and often providing the additional motivation to persevere.

What are your plans for the future?
I will consider undertaking a PhD in the future and would hope to do this at the University of Gloucestershire.
