'The MBA programme is an excellent opportunity to open your mind to understand different cultures and to learn new ways of doing business.'
Business is in my blood. My father and grandfather were both tradesmen, as both of them owned Volkswagen car dealerships, meaning that I grew up in a business environment.
Since graduating in 1997, I have always had the desire to pursue my education further and obtain an MBA as, in addition to my enthusiasm for business, I also take great pleasure and delight in learning new things, and expanding my academic and professional qualifications.
I believe the United Kingdom (and England in particular), with its strong currency and its status as one of the leading European countries, is the ideal place to undertake an MBA.
I feel that Newcastle University is an institution where an overall environment of co-operation and participation prevails, thus making it ideal for me to work in. The importance attached to developing collective projects is an important pull factor for me. Furthermore, I am confident that the enormous diversity in national and social backgrounds amongst the student population here, and the focus on international management, can contribute greatly to the expansion of my business perspectives. The MBA programme is an excellent opportunity to open your mind, to understand different cultures and to learn new ways of doing business. The University has the right tools to make it possible.
Andrew MacGarvey Executive MBA, Newcastle University
University previously attended Open University, UK Degree obtained Diploma in Computing Country of origin UK Age 38 years
Andrew MacGarvey is a director of Datatrial, an electronic data-capture firm with offices in Newcastle and the USA. He joined the Executive MBA to enable him to put theory into practice, and give him the insight that he needs to be able to expand with confidence and experiential knowledge.
'The modules we're studying have direct application back to my own employment.'
My firm is looking to expand from 35 workers to 150 in five years' time, with new offices on two different continents. The Executive MBA will give me a firm foundation to help steer the growth that the company will experience. The location of the Newcastle University Business School is fantastic, the facilities are excellent, the staff friendly with great organisation, and there are excellent networking opportunities.
Any academic course is theoretical and it is sometimes difficult to translate that theory back into the real world. The great thing about the Executive MBA is that I can take the premise I am studying and relay it back. The modules we're studying have direct application back to my own employment.
As a director of a company, it is often difficult to see things from a different perspective. The Executive MBA is helping me to identify different options and outcomes when making important decisions, and the part-time block delivery helps me balance my work and family commitments.
