Hobsons MBA - The University of Otago, founded in 1869 by Scottish settlers, was New Zealand's first tertiary education institution and now has almost 20,000 students enrolled. Since then, the University has maintained a reputation for excellence in education and research, and it pioneered its first MBA programme in 1976.

An international approach
Our students and staff come from around the world. We also have links with the top international business schools and universities, providing opportunities for staff and students to interact with the best and the brightest not just in Dunedin, but also around the world.

The Otago MBA
The Otago MBA is a top-quality, 16-month full-time MBA programme, which is academically rigorous with a strong focus on managerial relevance, practical application and personal development. It is both challenging and rewarding. You will be part of a very select group of highly motivated, intelligent and mature managers drawn from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures who work together in a supportive and collaborative environment. The small class size (25-30) ensures a large degree of personal mentoring and guidance from staff.

Team-based study
Management is essentially a team activity and, in order to be part of a high-performing team, team members need to be able to identify and harness group dynamics. Therefore, we assign students to teams that reflect the diversity of professional and educational backgrounds, demographics and work-style preferences. These teams work together on projects, presentations and assignments, and learn to better understand both their own and other team members' strengths and weaknesses while honing such skills as conflict resolution and problem solving. Our multidisciplinary approach to problem solving in small groups means we are able to simulate business reality in a low-risk environment.

The curriculum
By virtue of size and location, New Zealand needs to do business globally and, to meet the needs of global business in the 21st Century, the MBA curriculum maintains a strong international focus. It is structured to provide a broad foundation across all aspects of the external business environment and this is then built upon through courses in the functional areas of management and in strategy, progressing from the external to the internal environment. Critical-thinking and decision-making tools and techniques are developed and applied throughout.

Outside links
Throughout the programme, wide use is made of practitioners and leaders from within the business community for both teaching and mentoring. Developing these relationships not only benefits the MBA students, but also adds value to the organisations concerned.

Our multidisciplinary approach to problem solving in small groups means we are able to simulate business reality in a low-risk environment.
