    International University of Japan
Graduate School of International Management

Hobsons MBA - The International University of Japan (IUJ) was founded in 1982 with the aim of preparing future leaders for the challenges posed by a global economy. All courses are offered exclusively in English to a small and very diverse group of talented students who live and study together on a beautiful countryside campus.

The IUJ consists of two schools: the Graduate School of International Management, a business school, which offers an MBA and a one-year e-business management programme; and the Graduate School of International Relations, which offers MA degrees in international relations, international development and international peace studies. Students from both schools are encouraged to cross-register for courses to achieve a customised education.

The Business School
The IUJ Business School was started in 1988 in collaboration with the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College, USA, becoming the first US-style business school in Japan. The programme is built upon a curriculum focused on comparative analysis of global issues from a Japanese-Asian perspective, while adhering to the high standards set for a global MBA education. Through this unique approach, the IUJ Business School has established itself as a leading postgraduate business school in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region.

In response to the growing demand for managers with technology and business skills, a one-year e-business management programme was started in 2001.

MBA and e-business programme curricula
A high-priority challenge for both business and society is the development of leaders, managers and functional specialists who have an understanding of and capability to respond to changing economic, technological, social and environmental developments and concerns. To this end, the IUJ's MBA and e-business curricula are designed to help students acquire both the ?hard' and ?soft' skills essential to becoming effective leaders in their chosen field. They are based on five principles:

  • Theory-based reasoning and analytical thinking.
  • Practical relevance.
  • Becoming an effective leader.
  • Becoming an effective international team member.
  • Developing and utilising networks.

A carefully planned and executed thesis project under the supervision of a qualified faculty member is the culminating requirement of the two programmes.

Research and education platform
Under the current global business environment, it is essential for business leaders to be equipped with the latest theories and best practices in management, as well as with the skills and knowledge to work with governments and civil society organisations effectively. Thus, the IUJ provides a research and education platform (IUJ-REP) that allows students to be active researchers working closely with faculty members and corporations or international organisations on issues vital to the global community. These issues range from such themes as corporate restructuring and governance to market evolution and value co-creation, recovery from disasters and corporate social responsibility, and building peace; the very diverse and significant global challenges that we face.

Broad career opportunities
IUJ Business School graduates go on to exciting careers in Japan, Asia and far beyond. Finance, consulting, marketing/advertising and information technology-related professions are popular choices for both our e-business and MA students, as are various roles in international organisations and development agencies.

The Business School offers on-campus dorms with wireless LAN, fully functional library and three major computer classrooms.
