Overview The University of Washington's Executive Master of Business Administration program was founded in 1983 to provide working executive managers with the opportunity to earn MBA degrees while continuing their managerial careers.
The program offers two formats to accommodate students' work and travel schedules.
The Regional EMBA Program The Regional EMBA Program features classes that meet one day a week, usually on alternating Fridays and Saturdays. Executives from the metropolitan Seattle area can fit this flexible schedule into their work week. Every fall and spring, the class attends a weeklong residence session at a Northwest resort. During these sessions, students participate in classes full time.
The North America EMBA Program The North America EMBA Program integrates monthly, three- or four-day residential sessions on the UW campus with Web connectivity and online faculty interaction. This access, coupled with advancements in the faculty's teaching methods, allows online delivery of class materials and participation from students across the United States and Canada.
The 21-month curriculum builds on a solid foundation of business fundamentals. The first year includes courses in accounting, finance, statistics, strategy, team building, and leadership. The second year cements these fundamentals, encouraging students to bring the lessons learned in the earlier courses to current discussions. Case studies and group projects link theory to business practice throughout the program, encouraging students to find practical applications for their newly acquired knowledge. Students frequently use their own organizations as laboratories, applying lessons learned in the classroom and then bringing the results back to the class for further discussions.
Complete Development Recognizing that the successful executive depends not only on knowledge but on skill as well, the program emphasizes the development of the student's leadership abilities and communication skills while quickly providing a comprehensive management education. The culminating experience of each class is the international study seminar and Business Plan Competition. This study seminar tour enables students to place their own businesses and industries into a global perspective. Learning about operational innovations, new business practices, and critical economic issues affecting businesses in other countries has become a major emphasis of the executive MBA curriculum.
During the Business Plan Competition students present a formal business plan to a panel of venture capitalists, business professionals, and faculty members. The EMBA program's top-rated Foster School of Business (formerly the UW Business School) comprises faculty members who are widely recognized for their excellence in research and teaching.
