Dr Syed Jafri (UK), MBA 2007
An experienced surgeon/radiologist, Syed is taking a break from medicine and reassessing his career.
'If you're a medic, you make a decision in your early twenties which pretty much determines the rest of your life. I felt like taking 12 months out to consider the alternatives. Of all the high ranking business schools, Imperial was the only one that really catered for people with established skills developed outside business.
I had absolutely no business experience when I came. So the theory has been great - it gave me the in-depth business knowledge I wanted from an MBA. The practical focus of Imperial's MBA suits me as I learn best by doing. The core project work at the beginning of the year develops a set of analytical skills. You learn how to go through large amounts of information and hone down potential solutions quickly.
The other thing that?s impressed me is the electives. I decided to take medical related modules for credit but have sat in on other electives. I attended the Intellectual Property Valuation and Advanced Marketing courses and found them fascinating. They've opened my mind to possibilities I hadn't previously considered.'
