University of Salford Salford Business School
The University of Salford is just over one mile (two kilometres) from Manchester's city centre. Salford acquired university status in 1967, but its roots go back as far as 1896, when the Salford Royal Institute of Advanced Technology was founded. The University presently has over 18,000 full and part-time students, including 2,500 international students.
Salford Business School, whose origins go back some 30 years, now has some 3,600 students including 900 International students enrolled on its portfolio of management- and businessrelated courses, which encompass access, foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and professional-level programmes. Today, the University is a truly enterprising organisation and a centre of excellence in many areas of research, and is first choice for many public- and private-sector businesses. Through its networking partnerships and collaborations with industry, the School has built up an enviable and internationally recognised postgraduate research centre. There are presently 1,400 students enrolled on its professional and master's programmes.
The MBA programme The Salford MBA programme offers a broad study of business and management, with substantial emphasis on the international context of business. The programme is structured thematically to give a holistic, integrated approach to understanding organisations and their environment. The programme accommodates a measure of specialisation through the use of optional electives. The MBA incorporates the use of master-class sessions. Assessment methods vary and include examinations, assignments, team reports and presentations. A feature of the Salford MBA is the team consultancy project, which investigates a live business issue at a small or medium-sized organisation. The team then reports its recommendations back to the managing director and senior management team. The Salford MBA is designed for graduates from any discipline who possess some managerial work experience. It has been designed on the premise that some or even most of the subjects studied are being encountered for the first time. The programme also encourages applicants who may not necessarily possess a first degree, but who are working at executive level in an organisation and have substantial work experience. This is then used and built on in the learning process. The programme gives a balance between theory and practical application, developing problem-solving, research and team working skills. The School focuses on enterprise and entrepreneurship and works in partnership with local, national and international industry to facilitate change and our emphasis on practice led teaching ensures that our MBA see the benefit of these partnership experiences in the class room. The key entrepreneurial skills that we will help to develop include both individual and group presentation to different types of audience. We will encourage students to think actively and aim to turn them into truly original critical thinkers.
Salford's MBA intake is small and highly interactive and students will learn the skills that enable successful entrepreneurs to work with profit and non profit organisations in both the public and private sectors of industry.
