"I knew that that I needed to do an MBA that will distinguish me from others on the one hand and prepare me for the needs of modern management on the other."
Joanna, Class of 2007, Project Manager, Internal Traffic Logistics, Germany
Career history In her career Joanna has always been internationally oriented. She completed an exchange year in California, USA, during her high school time. While studying for her Bachelor of Commerce in Poland she was awarded a scholarship allowing her to join a course in transport engineering and management at a German university and she gained work experience at the global company DaimlerChrysler.
The decision made today always has its reasoning anchored in the future. Imagining my career, I knew that I needed to do an MBA that would distinguish me from others on the one hand and prepare me for the needs of modern management on the other. An MBA with a specialization in logistics, an expanding branch of the economy, in a logistics hub, close to the port that is the second biggest in Europe, has been a perfect choice for me.
Two Years in 12 months The program is more of a challenge than I had expected it to be: one really meets the requirements of a two-year program in just 12 months, but it is definitely worth it. The professors come from various business, academic, and cultural backgrounds and combine their knowledge with work experience during their lectures. The companies or universities they have in their CVs are greatly recognized and respected in the world arena.
The relatively small number of students prompts very good exchange with every participant and during various case studies presentation and teamwork skills are perfected. The curriculum combines topics required in the business world like corporate finance, marketing, accounting and logistics specific subjects covering IT, purchasing or organizing successful supply chain. Additionally, a series of leadership seminars are on the agenda, which help to grow personally along with developing professional skills.
Constant Link to Practice A very important advantage of the Hamburg School of Logistics is the constant link with practical experience that is implemented by a great number of visits to major logistics and production companies in the area, like Kühne und Nagel or Montblanc. It is also a great opportunity to build up a network for career development. Many of the companies visited support the program and show a lot of interest in professional partnerships. A good step towards professional contact is writing a master's thesis.
The Capital of Logistics in Germany What makes the year at the HSL complete is all that the Hanseatic City of Hamburg has to offer. In the business sense, it is the capital of logistics in Germany and plays an important role in the goods exchange between the west and east of Europe, as well as with the rest of the world. Its port is constantly developing and the infrastructure is a leading one on the continent.
Culturally, Hamburg attracts artists and famous people from all around Germany. Being known for a liberal attitude and for the beautiful architecture, Hamburg is awake 24 hours a day. This northern city is worth exploring and enjoying. HSL also provides a variety of excursions in the area and some beyond it, like Berlin. Many students from previous classes have stayed in the city and they also organize some leisure activities.
